As per the subject line.  While changing the oil, I found this:
http://webpages.charter.net/clickfam/oil%20change  on one of the magnetic
oil drain plugs.  I assume it is part of a dip stick.  It is about 2 inches
long with a couple of lines on one side and one line on the other. When I
purchased the 1980 XS650 Special/w sidehack  three or four years ago, I
noticed the 'oil filler plug' appeared to have something sheared off the end
of it, perhaps the rest of a dipstick.  Might be a coincidence.  I have also
noticed a bit more rattle and buzz recently, too.  I have also just
installed a new rear tire that was a bit too wide that necessitated the
replacement of my 18(?)tooth countershaft sprocket with the original 17
tooth (?) as well as adding another link to the chain to allow clearance
between the tire and swingarm.  Perhaps the noise is an issue of interfacing
an older chain with a fairly new countershaft sprocket  Is this indeed part
of a dipstick that turned up during an oil change or is it something more
ominous?

With best regards,

Ron

a drain plug part of a dipstick?
not even close.
the drain plug drains the oil as in the bottom of the sump.
it is the opposite end of a dipstick.
you need some basic mech courses or money to pay a mech.
please do not touch your bike...you have no real clue and
could be dangerous. try taking a wrench course...or find a
good place to get serviced.

Now who's the dipstick?
Ron said the metal strip was FOUND on the magnetic drain plug, as if it
had falled off the oil filler cap and sunk to the bottom of the oil in
the sump, then stuck to the drain plug. My old CX500 had such a dipstick
on the oil filler cap (but it was plastic and would not have stuck to a
magnet), so it's quite possible.
I think a man who's preapred to mess with sprockets is fairly
mechanically versed, wouldn't you?

Back to sleep 'e', thank you.

Have you ever noticed? Anybody going slower than you is an idiot, and
anyone going faster than you is a maniac.

Slow down 'e' and re-read the post.  By the way, I am a development tech who
was put through an elec./mech. apprenticeship program by my company. I
design, build, and repair test equipment and have worked on multi-million
dollar production lines.  I do think of myself as more of the foggy, liberal
arts type, though.  I, however, am not an XS650 guru.

With best regards,

yup, i did misread it.
there is a really good bunch of 650 sites, try google to get
them. the xs motor is pretty easy, it's kind of a big
weedwhacker, as is the sr. i have a 72 xs waiting for
restoration, behind a honda chopper and my poor triumph.
at least i have parts coming for the triumph.
not enough hours.
let us know how you make out.
