I just puirchased a new 03 R1 and right out the gate am having a bad
headshake during decellaration. No hands free moves for this guy. I looked
closely at tire pressure and thats not the problem. Could it be inconsistant
tire wear or what? I'm wondering if I dampen the steering would that help? I
have spoken to two other R1 owners an 03 and 02 and they have some head
shake too. Maybe an inherant problem with the Dunlop. What about switching
brands? Oh, I also checked tire balance. Any one having same issue. I ride
fast and hard. I put it through its paces. This is my 5th sport bike (never
crashed ever) but I love this bike but am dissapointed in this issue.

take to the dealer..still under warranty, yes?
if so, make them check the setup. the high school kid the
pay 5 bucks and hour to bolt them together may have screwed
up. in any case, have it checked professionally. could be a
dangerous situation.

All R1s headshake, although most commonly over bumps under acceleration.
This is a product of very steep steering head angle and too soft fork
springs.  A good steering damper and probably a set of stiffer fork springs
are both must-do mods for an R1

all R1s are like this that's why the 2004 comes with a steering damper bog
standard. some models seem to be more sensitive than others and even some
individual bikes but a good damper and keep an eye on those tyre pressures.
my bike turns like its got a flat if the pressures drop at all, you nearly
have to get off and wheel it around a bend. its very like having a flat.

A steering damper may help but it is probably hiding a problem.  Dampers
are meant to my knowledge for acceleration.  My '02 R1 only shakes
accelerating very hard, never slowing down.  It can be tire wear but
more likely something in the stearing hed (bearings, loose, bent forks,
...).

my v-maxs' do that and we all do a the Furbur fix which takes 15 minutes and
tighten the steering bearing a little...but if you do it too much, you wont
wobble, you'll weave...do a generic look up on the internet for the furbur
fix....

I have pretty bad headshack on my 02 R1 under hard accelration whenthe
front tire is skimming the road and when i put wheelies down. From i
hear the dampner really helps. My brother inlaw's 05 R1 has a dampner
from the factory of course and he doesn't get nearly the amount he got
from his 03 r1. I am looking at a GPR at the moment to help with mine.
I talked with a stunt rider last night who had an R-6 and his Gpr
helped tremendously.  Just another .02 from another R1 owner!  The
front tire profile does matter also!!!
