Lowers eliminate buffeting!

I installed the medium (16 1/4") Yamaha windshield on my V-Star 1100
Classic. The windshield created a narrow tunnel of calm air right
about my head, but I had a strong current on each side wipping about
my ears. That air was coming up from over the gas tank on either side.
That caused my head to shake, or vibrate if you would.

Anyway, after much research on the Internet (Google Groups and the
ISRA forums), I installed some lowers. The tunnel of calm air is now
much wider. There is no wind around my ears, and my head no longer
vibrates. I can see! And I won't tire as much. This is just what I
needed!

The problem now is that I hear much better. Man those valves are
noisy!!

Bruno,
This is Good News--looks like I'm in the market for lowers.
How far below your eye-level does the top of the medium windshield sit?

About the bridge of my nose is where the windshield sits now. It's
pretty good. The lowers I have right now are the Memphis Fats (the
ones I thought I had sold!). They are a good fit, but not a perfect
fit. On a much longer ride, I got some buffeting, although not too
severe.

I wish I could give the Yammy lowers a try. From the pictures I have
seen, they do seem to fit the bike better. But they are $175. That's a
lot of money. What if they don't perform any better than the ones I
have on now?

Yeah, it's like a lottery--maybe you'll win, but probably not ;-)

The Memphis lowers don't seem to be as long as the Yam ones, but they
don't taper down at the bottom as much, I think. Maybe the lowers can
only cut out some of the buffeting, and careful placement of the shield
reduces the rest(?) I'm still fussing with a Dakota windshield, but it
looks like I'm going to have to settle with wind in the face if I want
to avoid buffeting.

I even tried a 'Rumble Strip'. Save your money.

Are you still looking to sell the Memphis lowers?

Could be. I could use the money to buy the Yammy. Where abouts are
you?

Why so much for the lowers?  I checked the Yamaha web site and they should
sell for $89.95.

Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

That's what my Canadian dealer is asking. Actually, I checked with two
competing dealers. I guess it's what Yamaha charges up here.

Ahhhh, now I understand.  Canadian money.  Say, I have about $10 left over
from a trip to Thunder Bay, need it? <grin>
