I got this bike about a month ago and all was fine. I just did some
basic tune up stuff (oil, filters, plug). I pulled out the old plug
that looked like it had been in there since 1990. ;) The electrode was
quite worn but the plug was clean. I replaced it. The old air filter
was quite beat too with a few holes in it. The bike seems to be rare
in the US and all I could find for a replacement was a K&N. It was
pre-oiled, so I didn't mess with that. I put it in and have gone about
150mi since. I haven't touched anything else.
Yesterday morning as I was leaving for work it just stalled and
wouldn't stay running. I checked the plug and it was covered in soot.
I cleaned it, put it back in and now it's running fine.
Would the addition of the K&N have anything to do with it?
Seems to me it would be running leaner rather than richer.
Any ideas? TIA

You are correct that if the K&N had any effect, it would be on the lean
side. A few things come to mind:
1) Did you replace the plug with the same one/same heat range?
2) Is the choke sticking slightly on?
3) If the old air filter had fairly big holes, then this would flow better
than any air filter and if the plug was correct before, you may need to
simply turn the fuel mixture screw in 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
