I'm looking at getting a cruiser and the Yamaha Vstar 1100 has really
caught my attention. I have a few questions from those in the know
about their maintenance. I've read that changing the oil requires
removing the exhaust pipes. How hard is this and could it be done at
home in under an hour? How hard is it to adjust the valves and how
often do you need them adjusted? What would a normal maintenance
service cost from the dealer (oil and adjustments).
Any other issues to deal with?
Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave
The V-Star 1100 is a great bike. Oil change interval is 4000 miles. Oil
filter every 8000. I let the dealer do every other oil change to change the
filter...it costs $62. There are several oil filter relocation kits
available if you want to go that route. Re valve adjustments...not sure. I
have a 2002 and had it done each year.

I have a 2002 V-Star Classic 1100 and the maintenance isn't bad. I have a
bike jack for storage and it makes the oil change easier. Two nuts hold the
front pipe to the head, three or four hex drive bolts hold the pipe to the
frame and one pipe clamp. Unbolt the rear brake m/c reservoir, remove the
bolts holding the filter cover and the filter housing and it's off. From
the time I jack my bike up, change the oil and filter, check the tires, etc,
lower it down, fill it up, start it and run it for a few minutes, it takes
me less than an hour.
I won't take my bike back to the dealer it came from for anything. I also
bought the repair manuals for any future problems. I also change the oil and
filter every spring when I get it out for the first time, and I only ride a
couple thousand miles a year total.

you might want to condider changing the oil in the fall before you
park it. used oil contains acidic materails gathered over time. i
prefer to park it with clean oil over the winter, then drive away in
the spring
