I just acquired an '81 Yamaha and am trying to determine the model. The VIN
starts with 4H7, is this a Maxim?

Thanks,

Les

Les,

Yes, it looks like you have a Maxim (either a 650 or a 750).

Thanks Hank, it's a 650, built in 7/80.

Les,

You have the same bike as I have. I would highly recommend joining the
Yamaha XJ owners list on the internet. There are numerous experts on these
bikes that offer ome excellent advice. Sign up and you will be impressed!

I may do that, once I determine exactly what I'm gonna do with it. If the
engine's OK, I'm looking at converting it to a trike. Gotta get it running
first though. It's supposed to have a bad coil & the rubber boots holding
the carbs on are pretty rough. It's another winter project, as if I never
have enough of them.

Les,
There are boots for sale on ebay for under $10. (they have some cracks but
the seller states they are minor and on the surface). You can also cover the
cracks with RTV silicone.

You can also get a set of used coils for about $10 on ebay.

Good luck on the project

I'll check that out, as well as looking at a fabricated intake & single carb
set-up. I know it won't be as responsive, but it's not gonna be a race bike
by any means. A local has a Honda Goldwing running a 4 bbl Edelbrock carb.
Starts and runs good.

Cool. I need to locate a manual for this bike. I'd be very interested in
knowing how many ohms the coils are. Might have something already that'd
work.

Thanks. Once I get started, I'll post pics on my web site. I've got some
pics of my homebuilt hacked Triumph & a few other projects already.
