VStar 650 -- Crash Bars and Rough Shifting

Am looking for a good set of crash bars for an '04 VStar 650.  Have seen
some advertised for the 1100.  My guess is they probably will fit but would
prefer a set made specifically for the smaller VStar.  If you have mounted a
set on your VStar, did you then add wind deflectors that can flip back and
forth to give you engine heat on your legs in winter or allow the air to hit
them freely in summer?
One other thing.  I continue to experience rough shifting on my bike.
At first I was told it was just because the bike needed breaking in.  So I
remained patient.  But the problem persisted.  Then I was told I'd used the
wrong oil.  Switching to a good motorcycle did help, but the bike still
shifts roughly at least some of the time on every ride, usually when going
uphill
in stop and go riding after I've been riding for a good half hour to
forty-five minutes.  When I say shifts roughly,  I mean it becomes unusually
hard to move the shifter up with the toe of my boot or shoe, especially from
first to second and second to third, but to some degree through the entire
range of gears.  My plan is to change the oil one more time, and if the
problem doesn't go away, take the bike in while it's still on warranty and
insist that they open it up and find out what's wrong.  I suspect there may
be a part in the shifting linkage that is a bit bent, or something.
Has anyone else with this bike experienced the same thing?

I've been thinking something like that is wrong ever since I bought it.  Was
hoping it would just clear up, but it hasn't after about 3500 miles.

the  factory 1100 crashbars wont fit the 650. i found them to be  alot
smaller then i was expecting but i guess they will protect the motor if you
go down. check out

I got some "engine guards" (crash bars) for my 650 custom.  They are not big
at all.  They're just enough to protect the engine in case of a boo boo.

My bike only shifts rough when I manage to screw up.  Take it in and get a
service guy to ride it.  Sounds like something's bent.

I was thinking they might protect the gas tank if I drop the bike.  There is
sand all over the roads where I live because of all the rain we've been
getting, otherwise I wouldn't consider it.

Hmm, the service guy is the one who rode it and then told me it was because
I'd put in auto oil instead of motorcycle oil.  He recommended I change to
motorcycle oil, which I did, and even recommended I change it twice.  He
said the additives screw up the clutch and there may be residual amounts
left in there even after changing the oil.  He then said that the shifter on
this bike is a very simple affair and shifts a tad roughly by its design.
I'm going to change it again and insist they work on the sucker if the
problem doesn't go away.
