Hello,

I have virago 535 that hasn't much ridden since it was bought.
I struggled a lot with the carburation. But it begins to be better.
I rode 125 km and had no fuel more.
I went to a gas station and filled the fuel tank completely with only 9.8
liters.
I wonder if someone knows how to clean the reserve tank because I think the
problem is there now.

Thanks a lot

there should be a couple screws holding the fuel selector valve into the
bottom of the tank.  Just pull that out and clean the screens that are
hooked to the valve.

there is no seperate tank for the reserve.
the reserve is a hole on the top of the petcock.
it bypasses the tube that sticks up 1-2 inches for the main
supply.
you may wat to flush the tank with clean gas and clean the
carbs. that should work.
always use stabuilizer if the bike sits more than 2 weeks.

stabilizer for just 2 weeks is a little extreme.  I would say more like a
month.

depends on where you are. and winter gas has a lot of
alky-breaks down fast. 535 carbs are finicky, many people
replace them.

Thanks for your help
I unscrewed the valve and cleaned it.
Now I hear a "clic" when I put on the reserve.
I didn't hear it before.
Probably it was fastened by not using it.
I will regullaly put on reserve to let the valve work.
Everything that was in contact with fuel is greasy and dirty.
The carbs, fuel tank what is this ,I thought that fuel was clean ????

fuel is far from clean.  Thats why most vehicles have fuel filters.

no, diesel fuel is clean. gasoline is the piss of the oil
family. use the stabilizer and start the bike every 2 weeks.
SID - 14 Mar 2005 05:52 GMT
depends on what type of diesel fuel you are running.  regular diesel from a
pump isn't as clean as fuel oil and jp8 jet fuel which is a diesel is way

Gij hebt gevloekt zeker ? Kwam er nog iets uit de reserve ?
Het moet inderdaad luid klikken als je de schakelaar op reserve zet.
Zeg nu niet dat je hem hebt moeten duwen tot aan een benzinestation ...

Tank capacity depends on the age of your VX535.

1987 and 1988 models had only a 8,6 ltr tank capacity (6.1 ltr on main tank
and 2.5 ltr on reserve)

Yamaha must have regarded that as a bit of a balls up because  from 1989 and
onwards the tank capacity increased to 13.5 ltrs (11 ltr on main tank and
2.5 ltrs on reserve).

125km on9.8 ltr (if that is what you are saying)  is terrible as this is
12.75 km/ltr.  I ride my DX535 reasonably hard on occasion though certainly
not all the time and return an average of 19 km per ltr.

Had a thought about your problem.  Try this:  There is a filter stick on the
fuel outlet from the tank (under seat tank) that ensures fuel is filtered.
As bikes get older sediments sometimes build up towards the bottom of the
tank and restrict fuel flow as you get towards the lower levels in the tank.
This filter stick is removable for cleaning and at the same time you could
try flushing out any sediment in the bottom of the tank if the filter stick
looks contaminated.

Secondly I think there is also an in line petrol filter which you might
check to make sure it is not clogged.

Whatever the outcome if your fuel consumption does not improve (assuming you
are not hammering your bike) I would look at having the set up of the carbs
checked.

Andy
