4,000 mile tune-up question

Hello,

I have a 2004 YZF R1 that I'd like to try to give the 4,000 mile tune-up
myself.  In reading the service manual, it says that I need to siphon (pump)
the gas out of the tank before removing it.  Now it's been several years
since I did this on my dirt bike, but I don't recall ever having to siphon
the gas out before removing the tank.  Is this just an extra precautionary
step so that the tank will be more manageable (i.e. lighter) once it is
removed, or will gas seriously spout all over the place if I leave it full?

Thanks for any help,
Cory

Does the petcock have a off position.  if it does then by all means I agree
with you on leaving the gas in it.  Never heard of having to siphon the gas
out before.  Probably a safety thing put in for dealer maintenance.

Just run it to nearly empty before you do the work.  Easy.
