Anyone have one of previous years? I am thinking about getting one and
getting rid of my venerable 82 XJ 550 Maxim but I have questions: How is the
V star on the interstate( 70-75 MPH),Have enough ponies? How does it handle
with those fat 16 inchers at both ends?, How does it compare to the Honda
Shadow 750 aero, Suzuki boulevard 800 and Kawi Vulcan 800 also HD Sport 883s
I actually would prefer a larger bike but finances dictate otherwise for
now. Thanks in advance for your help

Do yourself a favour and get the 1100.

I have a 2002, and am quite content with it. Cruising at 75/80 mph is not a
problem. I went over Monarch Pass in Colorado in 5th gear all the way.
Riding with bigger bikes isn't a problem. In point of fact, if they're not
paying attention and let me get the jump on them they have to really pour on
the coal to catch up. There's no question that they CAN catch up, but
..........
The bike is quite peppy up to 80/85 where it starts to level out. Hitting
100 takes a while. But this old poop doesn't wanna go that fast. grin
cheers

My wife has the 650 and I have the 1100. While there seems to be more
power on the 1100, both feel as though they would use one more gear as you
get to the 65+ mph. I'd recommend the 1100 only if you enjoy the V -
Twin. If I had to do it over again I'd choose something that has less
vibrations.

Ask, and ye shall receive:

One thing that struck me about their comparo was the range in gas
mileage.

The 650 v-star is a great bike However, I think it is under powered for the
highway. I owned a 2002 and after one season I upgraded to the 04 1100
silverado. Wish I had gone to the road star instead

About a month after I got my 1100, I too wished I had gotten the
bigger bike. That's just me, though. The 1100 is quite sufficient for
real life use.

Wow what a wide swath of opinons. I am more confused than ever! I negleted
to mention in my original post that the 550 is my little bike I also had a
87 Venture Royale 1300 v-4 that sadly went fubar ,but that and my Kawisaki
ZN1100b had the kind of power I am used to. I guess these V-twin cruiser
mills just don't put out like a Four cyl. Unless you go really big cubes
(Road Star,Vtx1800,Vulcan2000)
I'm keepin the maxim for now(13sec/98 MPH 1/4 mile)
Thanks for the help

I'd have to respectfully disagree. I have one, and I'm not a kid. It gets
a lot of time out on the highway & the expressway. No problems here.

Not quite.
I'm not a lard butt like a lot of the guys that complain about the power of
the bike either. I guess that could make a difference.
