WTD: Virago 750 or 1100

Grendel - 16 May 2005 09:47 GMT
Hi all,

Sorry for the cross posting, but I'm in the UK and wanting a Virago, hence a
Yamaha and UK newsgroup.

As per subject line, I'm looking to buy a Virago, either 750 or 1100.  I've
got about £2000 to spend (providing I can get that for my Bandit, which is a
bit lower than Parkers says it's worth).

I used to have a 750 Maxim and loved it and would like to go back to this
style of bike.

I have done searches in altavista.co.uk and google (gave me a few links, but
nothing really that I could buy) and also looked on biketrader and ebay.

So, does anyone know either : someone selling a nice Virago for my price, or
know any websites I can look at?

I'm in Nottingham, so the closer the better, but am prepared to travel a bit
for the right bike.

Thanks,

Grendel.

Thanks for this, but it's red, not really sure it's my colour.  I should
have said, ideally I'm after a black one, but I think I might have to wait a
bit for one to turn up.

Had a look at them (got them as saved searches) they've either gone, wrong

So basically, you're not really looking.   Too far away MIGHT be an
acceptable excuse (of course the uk is f.cking SMALL so it's a lame
excuse.  But the wrong color part is a joke.

Well I think 194 miles to travel to see a bike in an evening (making it a
388 mile round trip) or further (362 =  724 round trip) is a bit too far.

I've just 'phoned most of them and they're all gone!

Colour is a factor.  Would you just buy any old bike or car regardless of
colour?  Most people won't.  For the right bike at the right price I'd
consider looking at different colours, but I have a preference.  But I can't
find any in any colour.

If it met all my other (much more important criteria) then *I* would. there
isn't exactly a whole slew of bits on a Virago that are painted anyway. All
of them could be taken off and prepped for a new colour within a day. Add
another day to get the paint on and the bits back on the bike, plus a few
quid for the painter and the bike is exactly the colour you want.

Most people won't.  For the right bike at the right price I'd

I would happily go to the other end of europe for *the right bike*. If it
was as rare as a repaintable XV11 at 2k I'd certainly travel for it if
that was the bike for me.

I'll warn you now about a couple of the pitfalls of big XVs though.

The cams were made of japanese cheese.

Properly hardened replacements aint cheap.

The starter motors aren't up to the job.

Especially on the 1100's.

The swinging arms rot.

You can't get them Viragos re-sprayed either. Apparently they fall apart at

Thanks to everyone who replied to this.

I've actually just bought a 650 Dragstar instead!  I've currently got a 600
Bandit and the Dragstar not as much of a commuting bike and I really notice
the power difference.  But I do prefer the look of cruisers and fancied a
change, but I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing.

I'd like to keep both, the Bandit for commuting and the Dragstar for doing
the rallies, but I don't think the bank would be happy with that!

If we all liked the same bikes, it wouldn't be long before there was no
choice would it? And the change from cruising to haring (and back again)
does make a nice change.

H-D notwithstanding however.

Precicely why the Virago is a good bike.  Nice seat. Much power
(1100).  Good on the road AND in the city.

Yes, I am, but I'm not one of these loonies who think that to ride a bike
means to squeeze as much power as is available and get round corners as
quickly and as low as possible!  I like a nice steady cruise.

Also, if I keep to non-cruisers I'm either going to lose my licence or end
up on the floor!  :(

Or use punctuation that well, but that notwithstanding, what a person
chooses to ride and how he chooses to ride it, is his/her business I
would've thought. It's piss easy to spout about how you like to "use the
bike", but we've only got your word for that haven't we? For all we know,

Look ma, an intellectual.

I'm still betting on the "uses body part to type" mode ... it's
obviously not a penis, as that's clearly been left unused for some
decades ... maybe it's had its ears surgically enhanced?

Yesssssssss ...

Only thing is, you appear to be unable to snip unnecessary text or
format a post worth sh.t, or write anything of interest, or get a decent
comeback rolling ... I'm beginning to hope that a keyboard is the most
dangerous solid object you're allowed near, because frankly a bike would
endanger others at your level of interaction with the world.

come to death valley with that lip and we'll see. a little

Anywhere, anytime. Combat or competition with morons is just too easy
though ... I prefer a challenge.

What, a couple of thou? You can get that much from the back pages of any
bike mag. Like I say, f.ck the bank. And this is uk.rec.motorcycles so you
can cut out the f.cking censorship. No-one will think any less of you.

Along with all the other couple of thous I've got as well, yeah, it could be
a problem making the repayments (yes, I think I might have stretched myself
a bit, so shouldn't really be buying another bike before selling my current
one).

It's not censorship, it's more to do with filtering out as much as possible
so work don't pick up on it.  ;)

I might be worth waiting for that.
