I am 53 years old. Two weeks ago I put 1200 miles on my '04 FZ6 in four days
riding the Pacific Coast Highway and lots of mountain roads in Southern
California (not to mention the trip from and back to Las Vegas). Hands and
butt never tingled, comfort was fine and I was never sore at the end of the
day. Average mileage was 49 mpg for the entire trip.
The bike is incredibly smooth at any rpm and gives me 54 mpg on regular at a
steady 80 mph. I just slide back against the rise in the seat and lay on my
tank bag. Elbows are bent and relaxed, no weight on my wrists and next to no
wind. With the 5 gallon tank, I can go about 215 miles before hitting
reserve (about 3/4 gallon left in the tank). BTW, I am 5'11" and weigh about
225 lbs.
For what it's worth, stopping would have been no problem with a 100 foot
reaction distance. I guarantee the bike will stop MUCH shorter than the car
if you are not scared to really use that front twin disk and the single
rear. The only thing not box stock on my FZ6 are the Metzler Sportec tires
front and rear installed at 3000 miles Much better than the stock
Battleaxes). I just installed a second new rear after my California trip (at
13,000 miles).
Tomorrow I am riding from Las Vegas to Victorville after work (leaving about
5 p.m.) for a Tuesday sales conference. I will return Tuesday night after
the conference. Total mileage will be about 320 miles. I'm looking forward
to the ride.
Anyone considering buying one of these bikes...go for it. Best bike I've
owned in 32 years of riding.
Paul in Vegas.

I enjoy mine as well. I am definitely happy with the performance and
stopping ability. Very comfortable bike....only additions are the lower
fairing, a brake light backoff and neon from DR> Neon...lights it up way
cool....

Boy, riding across that desert this week on a 600? You are hardcore. What
was it, 117 today?

Well, the sales conference was a couple of weeks ago, but it was still about
105degrees. Headwinds were kicking about 20-30 mph, so mileage dropped to 43
mpg on the trip to Victorville. I still made the 186 mile trip in two and a
half hours on one tank of gas.
The trip back the next evening was more fun (tailwinds). I left Victorville
at 5:20pm and was home in Vegas at 7:15 despite a four mile backup outside
Primm from a rollover SUV accident on the California side of the state line.
Speeds ranged from 70mph to 110 (on the Vegas side of Baker in the desert).
Mileage improved to 55mpg on the return trip.
This past few days (7/15 to 7/20) was the hot point of the year so far.
Temps were between 111 and 120 degrees in the valley and 125 at Lake Mead.
The only bad part of riding the bike was a lack of leather pants. The
airflow through my Dockers actually scorched my shins. Without leather
gloves and jacket it would have been impossible to sit up and grab the
handle bars. And you ride with a full face helmet with the face shield
closed to avoid the feeling you are riding into a blast furnace (sounds
worse than it is...I rode in the summer in Yuma for three years...hotter
than Vegas on average.)
