Idle, stalling on 1985 FJ1100

Hi,

After the rainy season here I started riding my FJ1100 to work and
back every day.  My problem started when I would come to a stoplight
or stop sign.  If I sat too long with my foot on the brake, the bike
would sputter and die.  As a quick fix, I atttempted to up the idle a
bit until I could address the problem more thoroughly.  But upping the
idle only a small bit made the idle unstable and it would jump up to
1500 to 2000 rpm and then settle back down after a minute or two.  I
took my bike to a friend's house and he and his car mechanic buddy
took it down to the carbs to see what they could find.  The only
specific thing the mechanic found was one of the set screws against
the choke bar was missing.  We replaced it and were not able to make
any more headway.  Today, I was riding home from work, my first ride
since getting the bike back, and the idle jumped up to 1500 once the
bike got warm and stayed there.  It did not do this on the way to
work.  So now my choice is a bike that stalls or a bike that idles at
1500 or above.  Any carb experts out there than could give me some
good ideas before I take my bike to a real bike shop?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Don't you thing is time to check the valve clearance. I had recently
this bike, a 20 years old bike, and once valve clearance OK then the
bike ran very well as it was a new one especially during the engine start.
Before doing that I've checked the carbs that finally were very clean
but without effect on the idle, engine start and so on.

I would not have thought valve clearance could cause such a problem.
The bike seems to idle smoothly, it just doesn't stay that way.
Nevertheless, you are right that it's time to have all that stuff
done.

Thanks,
Bob

Seems to me, I read of a similar problem and it turned out to be the
battery.

For what it's worth
Jim

92 FJ that is in need of valve adjustment.
