Never done it on my VSTAR, but on a lot of other bikes....just cut 'em
off.  Pour water in the new ones and slide 'em on.  The water dries and
the the grips stick.

cheers

I removed the grips from my 1100 using a utility knife to cut once along
the grip and then peel the foamy stuff.  Obviously you need to remove the
end cap and screw first.

After removing the grip it is usually a good idea to clean some of the old
glue.  My new grips came with a small tube of glue and it did not take
much to get them to stick.

do the end caps have to be put back on with the new grips?

Not with mine.  I bought the Kurakin [sp?] grips which came with their own
caps/screws so all the old stuff could be tossed out.
