1100 Dragstar - Noisy Top End

I know the top end for this bike is a bit noisy anyway but

I have a problem with a noisy top end, I tried a setting the tappets spot in
the middle of the adjustment range and it was still noisy, I have tried it
towards the tight end of the settings and I have tried it loose but it's
still not good I phoned Yamaha to check the tappet setting for my 1100
Dragstar and they gave me the same range as the current Haynes manual?.

I have just downloaded the factory workshop manual and this differs slightly
from the Haynes version.

The Yamaha factory manual says to start with the rear cylinder and find the
TDC "TI" by rotating the crankshaft "counterclockwise" then rotate the
crankshaft clockwise to find the front TDC "I" I have been using the Haynes
Manual version which asks you to rotate the crankshaft clockwise for both
TDC's.

Any thought before I take the bike to bits and try the Yamaha version

thanks in advance

have you adjusted the timing chain? loose chain can make noise.
