I have a used 86 Venture that runs quietly when cold but when it heats up
the valves make an irritating high pitched ring. I have to wear ear plugs.
Otherwise I love the bike.
Is this just the way the bike is or do you think it needs the valve
clearances adjusted?
I checked at the local dealer and he says that it's big job since the motor
has to be dropped slightly to access the valves.

Your dealer is full of sh.t. The cam covers will come off without
"dropping" anything. It's just his way of convincing you why he is going to
charge the hell out of you for something you probably don't need. I have
never heard a high pitch valve train noise like you are describing. It
makes no sense. That engine uses shim and bucket adjustment, and yes it is
a pain in the butt to adjust...even with the proper tools. My advise is go
somewhere else where there is a competent technician who has actually done
the work before, and can verify your complaint before paying through the
nose for a valve adjustment.

Wayne, please tell us who that dealer is!
PS: Didn't you have GW a few years ago? How does it compare?

I don't know who else has posted on this yet, but it's best to buffer
your valves at this point, meaning a low flash point higher RON/MON/PON
Techron/Alkane additives......
Meaning it's time to use the (92) Premium grade gasoline before more
*valve* damages accrue....any aftermarket valve buffer should be tried if
that doesn't work from a fresh tank full...
