I have a 650 that I cannot figure out why the headlamp will not come
on . Are there any common causes for this? The stator seems fine but I
am not sure about the reserve lighting device/ It does not seem to get
power but I am just using a test light to check it. Any help would be
apprieciated....Bill

yeah, what the man says. also, just hit one of the 650
support groups in yahoo or google. there are some guys who
can diagnose those bikes just by a good description of the
problem.
sort of related, one of my sr's would not start. the group
helped me pinpoint the problem, the stators which sr are
notorious for and a fix. instead of trying to find a nos for
$900+, they led me to a rewinder for $120 with a lifetime
service.
the taught me the three easy tests with a 10 buck radio
shack vtvom. so i didn't have to play sucker at a dealer and
the bike runs great. the 650 groups are better because they
are much bigger.
let us know how you make out.

Well, It was a dirty stator. Only thing now is my chrging system.
Seems as though I'm not getting good charging. The break/tail light
indicator glows when the bike's key is turned on but goes out when I
start the bike. I can't remember if this is normal. Thanks for the
replys...Bill

check every inche of the wire first. don't replace anything
until you do that. and see if you're getting at least 14
volts at the batter when the motor'e revved.
in 2000 i reto'd a 66 superhawk and replaced many parts to
only find a bad wire. it was where the wires go into the
stator and hard to see. get out the lens and start
eyeballing every inch of every wire.

Not getting 14 volts at the battery, only about 12 volts, I
will start
checking the wiring. There are a couple of places that I
need to clean
but it is so hard to get the connection apart and hard to
get to. I
think one connection is from the rectifier. Could one of the
field
coils be bad?
the rectifier? maybe, but they are pretty robust.
wires first. bet there's one that frayed, heated, or
stretched. use a vtvom if you don't want to search visually.
