When I had my Virago, I was so disgusted with the dull & dim stock
bulb that I bought the first/recommended brighter bulb at my dealer.
I don't remember, but it may have been a PIAA.
The stock bulb in my V Star is okay (i.e. nothing special), but I
still would like to increase my visibility. So in one catalog I found
PIAA Extreme White Plus halogen H4s, which look like they would be
great, but they're $47 per bulb. Despite basically believing in "you
get what you pay for," this has given me a bit of sticker shock.
1) Are these great bulbs and worth the $$?
2) Does anybody have any good alternate suggestions based on
experience?
Thanks,
DTM

That price seems about right, but Iv'e been told that the 'blue' lights
are better for the over 30 crowd.....something to do with how the eyes
work. A mate was the same as you, shocked by the price, but he reckons
it's heaps better for his night riding (read...swerving all over
backroads....)

They are not. Blue lights are actually worse for the eyes. Bulbs that
have blue tints to them have the filaments overdriven to produce more
light, because the blue tint removes so much of the light from the bulb
that if it wasn't overdriven it would fail the minimum requirements for
light output. Of course, the filaments fail a lot quicker.
The reason the blue bulbs sell is the HID lights have a blue tint and
people that buy the blue bulbs want to pretend that they have the
HID lights. In short, they are wannabes.

Give 'em a pass. for half the price you can get a set of Philips Vision +50%. As
good or better, cost less, last longer.

See denniskirk.com I just bought 2 ea for $14.00 each they are 130 hi / 100
low watts H4 bulbs. Stock is 60 /55 watts. I run these in all my bikes,
putruck, and Van.

Check the current draw agains the alternator capacity though and make
sure that that leaves enough headroom for other lights, anything heated,
and powered farkles.

Might also want to check that the wiring is really able
to carry that many amps without a problem.
People sometimes add a relay and a heavier wire
direct to the battery.
Plan B would be a set of auxilliary lights for about the
same price as the super duper blue ripoff bulb.

Or spend some serious bucks for HID aux lights.

I keep waiting for LED headlights/aux lights.
I think one or two mfrs are playing with them now.
Surprisingly, I read that heat might be a problem.
Don't know if this is true or not.

I have a 3V-lithium-battery-powered LED flashlight that gets
surprisingly hot (1 battery). Surprisingly bright too. I think it even
came with the requisite warning about the heat. I haven't burned myself
yet :-) Surefire E1L, for the curious.

Gonna be a long time before LEDs can throw enough beam to replace HID
and halogen headlights. Right now 5 watt Luxeons are state of the art
and they're a _long_ way from being a replacement for a 65 watt halogen.

a much better idea for much better coverage of roadway. at
80mph, you want a long reach to see the crap on the road.
