Hi, I am new to this group and would like to post this question.  I rode a
HD Heritage for a number of years before selling it.  Lately the Yamaha Road
Star  has got my attention.  If anyone is familar with this model can you
tell me how it compares to a HD?
What I mean is in overall quality, construction, materials used, fit ,
finsh , handleing.
I have compared prices and there is a big differance.
Is the old saying true that you get what you pay for. Or, can Yamaha
produce a compareable & reliable  motorcycle at less cost than HD?    I sure
do like this bike and I have read alot of good reviews about it. And the
leftover 05's are a great deal.  Thanks!

Heya Joe.

I think that aside from the obvious differences, you would be doing yourself
well on a RoadStar. I have a VStar 650, not the same I know, but my Star is
very reliable, durable, low maintenance and most of all fun to ride.

You can ask this question with other Star owners at
yamahashttp://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahastarriders/

People here dont care what you rode and are very responsive to all sorts of
questions.

Give them a shot.

HD = Iconic name staus and cult following for overpricing. Also there's the
Me too! Me too! Me too! factor. They're great bikes but geeze there are
another one or two choices out there as well. Too many people that ride
Harleys care only that is says Harley. If the bike doesn't say Harley it
will be o.k. -- promise. If this seems scary then there's always -- Me too!

I ride a Pearl White 06 Yamaha Roadstar Silverado 1700 and enjoy it
very very very much ... it is so easy to modify and customize with
after market accessories. The ride is terrific as is its handling and
I have driven it from Tucson to Taos and parts in between twice since
I purchased it in March 07 used with 585 miles on it and I have over
5K on it now ...

I had an VStar 1100 and put 8000 miles on it before going with the
1700.

One thing that takes getting used to is in really tight turns the
floor boards do touch pavement but the floor board are designed with
replaceable scrape pads and after a few times it is rather fun to hear
them touch!

You might try the Roadstar Riders Forum on the WEB as there are a lot
of members there that can answer your questions also ... reliabilty is
excellent on the 1700 .... if you buy a used Roadstar 1600, 1999-2003,
make sure it has had the transmission recall done or have it done when
you buy it ... 2004 to present no transmission problems.

A lot of the HD accessories will fit the Roadstar ...

BTW my 1700 with after market Thunder air breather, 2 into 1 Roadhouse
exhaust, 2 up- 2 back handbar riser, engine guard, HD RK Hard Bags and
Heritage Soft Leather saddle bags, throttle lock, 1000 lb upgraded
suspension spring, cost me 10K  used with 585 miles and no state sales
tax. I have replaced the stock seat with an after market one as I
think the stock seat sucks - but that was easily over come.

I would rather pay less $ for a motorcycle that rides excellent and
looks fantastic than spend more money for a bike - oh well just say I
am very happy and proud to ride my Metric Steed and I am no less for
it either. I ride with other that have any number of brands and think
no more nor any less of them for what they ride ...

Just think how many road miles and accessies you can get with the
money you save.

Another thing is my insurance is considerably less for my Roadstar
than for a similar size Harley :)

Harley has a good bike and they have come a long way and have a great
fan base but not for me to buy for all the xtra $$$$.

Just one riders opinion.

Go with what you like and will ride -- it is YOUR bike and YOUR money.

I saw somebody write something like "1/3 of the problems at 1/2 of the
price" or vice versa, comparing their Yamaha or other metric cruiser
to HD.  While I'm not here to bash HD or any manufacturer, I'm more
than pleased with my experience and Yamaha's reputation for quality.
I'm on my second Yammer cruiser and have never had a problem with
either one.

It seems like when I read comparative reviews of cruisers, the Yamaha
in the group many/most times gets placed at or near the top, or
labeled best overall.

I put 11000 miles on my 2006 Vstar Classic Silverado before laying it
down in early June 2007.

No probs or complaints at all about the Vstar other than to say it needs
a 6th gear and a better stock seat. I sat on the Road Star and its
saddle was much much nicer. I think the instrument panel on the Road
Star is less than appealing but otherwise no issues with the Factory or
the bike.

I AM disappointed with my local dealer however. They tried to tell me it
would cost $5000 to fix my laid down bike. I'm having another non-dealer
shop return it to functional for $300, and will fix the aesthetics for
less than $1000. (Liability only, so I pay).
